Policies Around the World
In 2017 China stopped accepting plastic recycling from the US. As a result more plastic than ever is entering our landfills (McCormick et. al , 2019). Read https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jun/21/us-plastic-recycling-landfills for more information on this issue.

A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute - 20,000 bottles a second and the numbers are only going to increase. In 2016, only 7% were made into something new and less than 50% were recycled (Laville and Taylor 2017). Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is putting the disposal responsibility of consumer products on the producers instead of the government. There are no EPR legislations in the United States by the federal government, however 25 states have state recycling legislation for e-waste (Tian et al. 2020).
